Featured Project Report: Liebherr LTM 1400 Extension Rod & LHM 500 Stabilization Cylinder
Select Fluid Power built a state-of-the-art hard chrome and hydraulic repair facility in 2014, designed to accommodate the industry’s high capacity needs. Since the facility’s debut, the team at Select has worked on jobs ranging from chip dump cylinder repair and rotary shaft chroming, to polishing and knurled rod chroming. Our facility features a 50 ft. chroming tank, a 16, ton crane system, and a 50 ft. polisher to better serve our customers with high capacity requirements.
Recently, the technicians at Select Fluid Power completed the hydraulic cylinder repair, including the chroming, of a Liebherr LTM 1400 extension rod, measuring 1 ft. OD by 44 ft. in one go, and within 7 days. During this period, the team also completed the repair of an LHM 500 stabilization cylinder, measuring 2 ft. OD by 10 ft. in length.
Completing a job of this size, in-house, is unusual for a hard chroming facility. Because there are so few facilities that can accommodate and chrome an extension rod of this size, many companies will accept the job and either outsource it, outsource the work they cannot complete, or engage in double-dipping.
If the company you are working with chooses to outsource the job, keep the following points in mind:
- Working with multiple companies will cause the price to increase
- Depending on where the secondary facility is, your turnaround time may increase
- Dealing with multiple companies can impair communication
Alternatively, if the company you’ve chosen doesn’t have chroming tanks with a capacity large enough to handle your cylinder, and they choose to complete the job in-house, a technique known as “double-dipping” will be employed. When a facility’s chroming tanks are smaller than, or are not equal to the size of the extension rod, the facility will make up the difference by chroming both ends. While there is nothing wrong with this practice, it can increase costs considerably due to the additional work required and the amount of chrome used. Furthermore, in order to remove the excess chrome in the center, the extension rod will have to be ground and polished down, increasing everything from costs to turnaround times.
